Antinozzi Associates People and Projects are Recognized at Three Very Special Events!
June 30, 2022 - June was an award-winning month for Antinozzi Associates Architecture and Interiors. The month's accolades began with the Construction Institute (CI) Annual Awards event. CI recognizes the industry’s most outstanding leaders each year on this special evening. Individuals who are honored are committed to CI’s mission of promoting cross-industry collaboration.
On June 9, 2022:
F. Michael Ayles, FAIA, and Principal of Antinozzi Associates, was recognized with CI’s Distinguished Service Award for significant contributions during his many years as a volunteer with CI and serving on the advisory board and as one of the creators of the institute’s Architectural Engineering and Construction (AEC) Leadership Conference. Mr. Ayles has served on many committees and boards, for organizations such as the ACE Mentor Program, NCARB, SMPS, CBC, and CI. And he was also recognized, along with 2022 Planning Committee members, for effective teamwork and their innovative contributions to the AEC Leadership Conference. 2022 AEC Planning Committee members include: Kate Anderson of The Lee Company, Tiffany Cartier of Fuss & O’Neill, Jim Cecil of Nexii, Kaitlyn Dobberfuhl of Gilbane Building Company, Jeryn Koritzinsky of BRG, and Tony Messina of Whiting Turner Construction.
On June 14, 2022:
The design and build teams of Stratford High School's 2021 Renovation/Addition project were awarded first place in the Large K-12 Schools category of the Connecticut Building Congress CBC Team Awards. Truly a team effort, hundreds of people and dozens of companies came together for nearly a decade to produce a significant building. Turner Construction Company, along with the multitude of skilled tradespeople in the 26 trade packages on this job, realized the Antinozzi design team’s vision and built a school that is expected to serve the Town of Stratford for generations. We could not have done this without the entire project team. As the Architects, we want to offer up some specific congratulations on the design side.
Congratulations to the Award-Winning Team:
In-house at Antinozzi Associates:
- Lisa Yates, AIA, LEED AP: Lisa achieves the larger artistic vision through her focus on constructable details. She was the point person for the Design Team starting at the beginning of Schematic Design and continues to finalize closeout today. She dedicated years of her professional life to this effort, but what made it really special was to witness each team member bringing their own special skill set to make this a better building.
- Brittney Dishian, NCIDQ: Brittney was responsible for interior finishes on the project. Her vision and technical capabilities set the tone and theme inside every Stratford High School space.
- Patti McKeon, NCIDQ, IIDA, WELL AP: As our head of Interior Design, Patti brought her deep understanding of K-12 learning and her eye for detail to the design. She was instrumental in initial building programming and was in charge of furniture design for the project.
- Kevin Matis: So much more than our IT Director, Kevin is an expert in all things K-12. He organized the design effort in Revit and helped ensure Code Compliance.
- Kevin Gatzke: Think of Kevin and his 3D modeling skills when you see the fantastic auditorium. He helps us realize the design vision in all dimensions.
- Leo Gutierrez: A project like this has dozens and dozens of details; Leo was instrumental in this effort, and provided continuity into construction as well.
D’Agostino & Associates: Marc D’Agostino, responsible for technology and communications, literally helped bring Stratford High into the information age, coordinating devices and security throughout the school.
GeoDesign, Inc., and O’Reilly, Talbut & Okun Associates (OTO): For some projects soils work is an afterthought; not this one. Late in design, records were uncovered showing trace amounts of asbestos in the soils. Ulrich LaFosse of GeoDesign promptly responded by developing innovative soils improvements so we didn’t have to dig so much and by bringing in OTO for environmental soils work, successfully getting us out of the ground. Ulrich’s successor on the project, Paul Woodell, maintained this effort through construction.
Innovative Engineering Associates (IES): Our engineers for structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and the IT backbone, IES truly went above and beyond to provide cohesive systems for the building. We are particularly indebted to the steady hand of Partner David Maurer, PE for staying the course with us to provide continuity and service over the many years of this project. We were also very lucky to have Rick Bialecki in charge of construction administration; as head of commissioning for IES, Rick is uniquely qualified. The project also hired the BIM coordination arm of IES in construction, so lead modeler Rob Boyle was able to work construction and design together seamlessly.
Jaffe Holden: Russell Cooper and Steven Schlaseman analyzed acoustics throughout the school, making it a more functional and pleasant space for learning. Specialty AV consultant and Stratford resident Ben Bausher brought his expertise in world-class sound to our Auditorium, Lecture Hall and Gymnasium spaces.
Stantec: Antonio DiCamillo, PE, our lead Civil Engineer, carried site design for us from initial zoning through the end of construction, providing an attractive and highly functional design on an extremely tight site, complemented by the landscaping of Jeff Olszewski, RLA, ASLA.
Theater Design Inc.: Michael Mell designed technical aspects of our auditorium including lighting and rigging, and assisted with sight lines and catwalks so it is as good functionally as it is aesthetically.
Raymond & Raymond: Brett Farrell was responsible for food service design, including a higher-ed style cafeteria with an open serving line and a commercial teaching kitchen
Although we didn’t comprehensively list every contributor from each firm, this is a long list - and we didn’t even get into Owner’s consultants and Contractors on the project. Each person made the facility better, and this is why Stratford High was such a great team project. And a project of this length invariably gets to the finish line without some of the original players. We have enough to fill at least the Lecture Hall at Stratford High School, and we are grateful to all of them. We would be remiss, however, if we did not specifically acknowledge former Antinozzi Associates leaders Paul Antinozzi, AIA, and George Perham, AIA, NCIDQ. As a Stratford High alumnus and Partner-in-Charge, George Perham was personally devoted to this project and brought the full force of his design experience back home to the Stratford Red Devils.
