Regional Leaders Celebrated Economic Growth and 2015 Regional IMPACT Award Winners at the Bridgeport Regional Business Council’s 141st Annual Meeting
BRIDGEPORT, June 10, 2015 – Over 300 business and community leaders gathered on June 8, 2015 at the Trumbull Marriott for the Bridgeport Regional Business Council’s 141st Annual Meeting & Luncheon. The event, sponsored by Aetna, Bank of America, People’s United Bank, and UIL Holdings Corporation, was a celebration and showcase of both regional economic development and the businesses and individuals who have had a positive impact on the Greater Bridgeport Region.
Five businesses and/or individuals were recognized this year for service to the Bridgeport Region via the BRBC’s Regional IMPACT Awards:
2015 Barnum Financial Group Volunteer of the Year Award
Eric Hendlin, Managing Principal of Dworken, Hillman, LaMorte & Sterczala P.C. is currently in his sixth year as the Treasurer for the Bridgeport Regional Business Council. As working with non-profits is one of Eric’s areas of expertise, his guidance has been invaluable to the BRBC – both to the leadership and to the Finance Department. He brings knowledge, experience, and best practices from his work with clients to his role as a volunteer on numerous nonprofit boards.
2015 Hampford Research, Inc. Tee Hampford Educator of the Year Award
The Stratford’s Business Education Support Team, known as BEST, is a partnership between the Stratford Chamber of Commerce and the Stratford Public Schools. BEST has been facilitating collaborative relationships between business and education and offers resources to the school system in multiple ways, including a mini-grant program which has brought in close to $500,000 in donations and has served over 90,700 students since its inception.
2015 AT&T Regional IMPACT Legislator of the Year Award
State Senator Kevin Kelly from Stratford, representing the State Senate’s 21st District, is an avid supporter of the jobs growth agenda of our state’s business community. Kevin is always there when needed. He is conscientious, articulate and the regional business community counts Kevin as a reasonable voice for a pro jobs agenda.
2015 PSEG Power Connecticut Green Business Award
Bridgeport Bio-Diesel is growing its capacity to produce biofuels from brown and yellow grease from one million gallons a year up to thirteen million gallons a year and is increasing jobs from 6 to 35 in the coming year within the new Eco-Technology Park. Operating in a sustainable manner, Bridgeport Bio-Diesel equipment is running off solar panels. Additionally, the company utilizes natural gas vehicles to transport products. 2015 Fletcher Thompson, Inc. Regional IMPACT Economic Development Award
Bridgeport Landing and Steelpointe Harbor Development is well underway with shovels in the ground, steel rising, and targeting the opening of at least four new businesses by the end of this year. Robert Christoph, principal of RCI Marine, the developer of Bridgeport Landing and the Steelpointe Harbor development project accepted the award for the Steelpointe Harbor Development.
The afternoon’s celebrations included a video-taped message from Congressman Jim Himes to the BRBC community and a look at the BRBC’s latest print edition of its quarterly review of the region’s economic development projects and progress, The QR. The June edition of The QR features more than 30 important regional economic development projects that are currently planned or in motion. Also appearing in the Fairfield County Business Journal and online at www.brbc.org, the June edition of The QR offered an added look at the significant contribution that the region’s Higher Education leaders (Fairfield University, Housatonic Community College, and Sacred Heart University) and the region’s hospitals (Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center) deliver to the economic well being of the Greater Bridgeport Region.
Representing 800 member businesses and organizations in the Greater Bridgeport Region, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council is a voluntary organization that works to promote regional cooperation and economic development via advocacy for the expansion, retention, and recruitment of business, improved transportation/infrastructure, affordable healthcare, and business friendly legislation in pursuit of its goal to increase jobs and tax base growth. The BRBC includes six affiliates: The Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, the Trumbull Chamber of Commerce, the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, Leadership Greater Bridgeport and the Women’s Leadership Council.
